SKARDU: The use of state force and registration of fabricated cases under the anti-terrorism law to silence the voice of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan is a conspiracy to suppress the right of self-determination of the two million people of the region. This was stated by Manzoor Hussain Parwana, the chairman of the Gilgit-Baltistan United Movement (GBUM) in a press release here. He said anyone associated with the national movement was a national hero and ill treatment of and torture on such national heroes was intolerable for the people of the region. He said that the registration of terrorism cases against Col Nadir Khan, Safdar Ali, Iftikhar Hussain, Wasim and others was an insult with the two million people of Gilgit-Baltistan. He said every citizen going towards the office of the UN observers in the city was being framed in fake cases under the terrorism act. He said it was also a matter of great concern that the UN observers were not taking any notice of the widespread rights violations in Gilgit-Baltistan. The purpose of the observers’ office was to keep the UN informed about the situation in the disputed region and if going towards the office was a crime, the facility should be closed. The GBUM chief also said that rights defenders and nationalists such as Baba Jan, Safdar Ali and Col Nadir should be released and the cases against them should be withdrawn
