Police action against rally condemned

GILGIT: Tehreek Huqooq-e-Gilgit-Baltistan held an important meeting chaired by its chairman Khawaja Rizwan Ahmed.

Addressing the meeting, Awami Action Tehreekís chief Ehsan Ali Advocate said that a few days back police attacked the participants of a peaceful rally which was condemnable. He demanded that action should be taken against the police. He said it has become a fashion that whoever speaks about the peopleís rights they are dubbed as traitors.

It may be mentioned that the Tehreek Huqooq-e-Gilgit-Baltistan had taken the rally against the municipal corporation for taking taxes from small vendors, barbers, push cart vendors, hotel owners etc. the rally was taken out from Kashrot and the participants were chanting slogans asking the government to stop taking the ghunda tax and extortions. But when the participants reached Kashrot and were turning into a big public gathering the police attacked them. When the protesters approached the assistant commissioner of the area, officials in the office tried to pressure them away by declaring them as anti-state elements and traitors.

The participants of the meeting demanded that the government should take action against the police and the officials for their unprofessional attitude towards the peaceful protesters. They said that the government should respect the rule of law and the right of the citizens to express their concerns by holding peaceful rallies. They said that such strong arms tactics would fail to get the results as the people of the area have become more aware of their rights.
